Poetry Night is one of WIDE School’s most cherished traditions. Each year, parents and students come together to share poems and self-portraits in an intimate evening of reflection, creativity, and connection. It’s a special time to celebrate each child’s growth and the bond between parent and student.
This is a formal evening event for each student and their parents only.
Please do not invite grandparents, siblings, or other family members, as space is limited and the evening is meant to be an intimate parent–child experience. Families who arrive with additional guests will not be admitted.
To accommodate families with multiple students, presentations are scheduled in a specific order with planned intermissions so parents can move between classrooms.
If your family is unable to attend, a poem is still required. All poems will be collected and published in a book to honor the event.
Before the Event
Teachers provide a set of prompts for parents to choose from.
Parents write a poem for their child, inspired by one of these prompts.
Poems must be submitted by the deadline before Poetry Night.
A writing workshop is offered to provide support and guidance to parents.
On Poetry Night
Parents will read their poem to their child for the first time.
The reading may be done by one or both parents.
Poems may be written and read in any language.
Each class is given a customized prompt of self-reflection.
At school, students write a poem about themselves and create a self-portrait.
On the evening of Poetry Night, families gather in their child’s classroom.
One by one, students present their work.
The student’s self-portrait is placed on stage, and they read their poem aloud beside it.
The Investigation Fair is a WIDE tradition and it is our twist on a traditional science fair project.
WIDE students will go through the journey of finding answers through first person investigations! They will not gather information that someone else has gone through the process to learn. Your WIDE student is in the driver’s seat and they will be the one teaching others!
The entire process typically takes a couple of months. The beginning part of the process is done with the guidance of the teachers at school. Then, parents will support their student with the remainder of the project. This typically involves executing their procedure by interviewing an expert, doing an ongoing experiment, writing reflections, quantifying data, and creating a final board.
